PageSpeed Insights Updated To Make Your Site More Mobile-Friendly

PageSpeed Insights works to make the page load faster by analyzing content of a web page and then generating suggestions.

How PageSpeed Insights measures performance?

Time to above-the-fold load: Elapsed time from the moment a user requests a new page to the moment above-the-fold moment is rendered by the browser.

Time to full page load: This is the elapsed time from the moment a user requests a new page to the time page is fully rendered by browser.

Google says in its announcement, “an average mobile page takes more than 7 seconds to load, and by using the PageSpeed Insights tool along with its recommendations, you can make your page load faster.”

Some of the new recommendations which are now part of PageSpeed Insights tool include:

1. Configure and size content to viewport

A viewport controls the display of a webpage on a mobile device. If you do not have a viewport, then mobile devices will render the page at a typical desktop screen width. Viewport allows you to control the page’s width and scaling according to the device.

2. Content fits the width of the viewport

When developing a site with meta viewport tag, make sure that your pages render correctly on many different devices. As your mobile users are scrolling websites vertically and not horizontally, the site content must fit the width of the viewport.

3. Size tap targets correctly

For providing a stellar browsing experience to the users, you should ensure that the most important tap targets on your site. They should be large enough to be easy to press, at least 48 CSS pixels tall/wide. The tap targets should be large enough to press easily.

4. Make use of legible fonts

Web page fonts should not be too small to be legible. Web font size can be specified via pixels (px), points (pt), Ems (em), and percent (%).

5. Avoid use of plugins

As most of the mobile devices do not support flash, so you need to ensure that your mobile site does not solely rely on plugins.
